Well, that was a great conversation and I am so happy to get to know a bit about Emily. I am very excited about her coming onto the Unspeakeasy tomorrow. I am not a conservative or a Christian but I really love anyone who is fact-based and just wants her views to be understood, whether one agrees or not. From that foundation, talking is so easy!

What I often find is that these people who identify as conservatives have values and preferences that I find abhorrent, but at least they have a grasp on facts.

It is just really difficult to have any meaningful conversation with someone who will say (as they talk about in this interview) that 1 in 5 women are raped in college and think that this is a reflection of how the world works. And so on for various other things.

"to troll is to speak"... is it because they don't go to the bar with their friends?

great questions... since listening to the interview about sobriety from alcohol and social media, I've definitely been thinking that sobriety from alcohol is over rated and given to much credit for bad habits and behavior - not that it doesn't contribute. But, much like the internet itself and social media, its a tool and can be misused.

The more serious point, tho - is are we as humans properly socializing? Is there danger in substituting social media for authentic in real life interaction?...

she typed into the comments section of a podcast... lol

Oh goodness, Phyllis Schlafly. The College Republicans brought her to speak on my campus when I was a freshman. I was in the school’s feminist group, and most of the other women in it wanted to organize a protest of her visit. I was confused because 1. I hadn’t heard of Phyllis Schlafly before and 2. Why? She just sounded like some lady who was going to say stuff. What would we be protesting exactly? That she was being allowed to speak? I remember spending the afternoon in a school computer lab, catching up on who she was and some of her writing. I didn’t find it particularly compelling, but I also didn’t understand why it was protest-worthy - I decided to skip the talk. In retrospect, this was an early warning sign of the troubles that were to come during my years in feminist spaces…

I liked this conversation. I was impressed with Emily. She’s bright and articulate. I am not saying this to be mean, but I found it amusing that Emily says she cares about being right and about truth, but she’s an evangelical christian.

I don’t like Elon Musk. I don’t know a lot about him, but his indiscriminate breeding just rubs me the wrong way. Same with that Nick Cannon dude. I get that in evolutionary terms, they’re killin’ it, but I just find that abhorrent. I do believe that it’s better for the life experience for someone to be born into wealth than into poverty, but that kind of thing also brings out the worst in the women who are the mothers to all these kids. Constantly worrying about someone else’s kid getting something their kid didn’t get, etc. Just ewwww.

Regarding Gamergate and toxic video games. I recall back in the day male game designers worked very hard to get the best "breast physics" in the movement of female characters. I think this was one of the things the woman game designers objected to. You can still Google the term for lots of discussion and examples.

Excellent choice of guest, Meghan! Emily is just so reasonable, enjoyable, and also adorably wholesome.

You two talking about Tim Dillon and Steve Bannon was like the podcast world coming together in the best way.

I hope you have her back on again!

You've both prolly read "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman, but lots of the discussion here reminds me of that book.

The thing about billionaires is that the first thing they do after earning their first billion is figure out how to get their next billion. The money is never enough.

I think what Elon wants is to be popular and funny -- that's why he went on stage with Dave Chappell. He thought he would say a couple of funny things and the crowd would love him because he's the most interesting man in the world.

He is a gaping abyss of insecurity.
